Karen Mitchell was born and raised in Port
Townsend. She graduated
from Port

Seattle
University, where she met her future
husband in the Hiyu Coolees, the
Seattle
U. hiking club.
She graduated magna cum laude from Seattle U. in 1970, and she and her husband Tom
iwere married six
days later, on June 13, 1970.
Karen first worked in libraries as a library aide
at Port Townsend Public Library while she was in high school.
That was when she became certain that being a librarian was
her vocation, and she has never changed her mind about that.
She worked at the reference desk at the Seattle University
Library while attending Seattle
U., and for a year after she graduated,
and then worked at the Federal Regional Council Library in downtown Seattle.
Tom and Karen
moved to Washington,
DC, in 1972, and lived there for
nine years. Their two
daughters, Elizabeth (Beth), born June 3, 1972, and Frances, born February 17, 1974,
were both born in DC.
Both daughters live here in
Port Angeles.
The family moved to
Port Angeles in the summer of 1981.
Karen began working as the Queen of Angels School librarian
in January 1982, after mentioning her willingness to help in that
capacity to
Frances’ second grade teacher,
Theresa Sekac, at a parent conference in November 1981.
This is her 29th year as the school librarian.
