Queen of Angels Parish is located on the North Olympic Peninsula in a section of Port Angeles, Washington, known as Cherry Hill, an older residential area of town. The Catholic community in Port Angeles began with a celebration of the first Mass on January 25, 1891, by Father Austin Faber. In 1904 the Benedictines arrived, and the parish was established. Queen of Angels became an Archdiocesan parish in 1981.
The original school was built across the street from the church in 1926 and opened in 1927, staffed by the Sisters of St. Ann from Victoria, BC. The school was a one-story structure, with a basement, for grades one through eight with two grades in each classroom. In 1930 a second story was added and, for a short time, a ninth grade. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace of Newark arrived in 1947 to replace the Sisters of St. Ann. In 1973 the school expanded again with the addition of Kindergarten. A four-year-old preschool class was added in 1981 and a three-year-old class in 1991.
During the 1960s and 70s, with a dwindling number of sisters teaching at the school, more laity was hired. In 1981 the first lay principal was hired at Queen of Angels School. The Sisters of St. Joseph taught until the mid 1980s at which time the convent was closed.
Recent years have seen Queen of Angels School seek expansion in technology. The school added a portable building in 2007, which houses our library and computer lab. With a generous donation from the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation, classroom received Activboards in 2010.
We currently have an enrollment of 147 students in grades Prek-8 and look forward to a bright future serving the children of the North Olympic Peninsula.
